First of, I would like to state that my record time is misleading. I had played co-op with my friends who are financially disadvantaged. However, our experience with this game was not good.
The core issue with this game is that it is not designed for a co-op experience at all. There is no way to find each other and if you respawn, be ready to teleported kilometers away from your friends. This is huge problem in winter when you are immediately set on a death clock. Game lacks any sort of tutorial. You are dumped on an island and are expected to survive. It is fine in spring, summer and autumn, but game loves to introduce winter out of nowhere. There is no transitionary period. One day it is a sunny autumn, you tend your vegetable garden and in another everything is frozen. Worse yet, you are expected to survive when everything is turned upside down. No old strategies are working and you are put on a timer to get going. This makes this game extremely unforgiving to new players as you are either expected to play a lot of time before having a chance to get screwed up and die over and over again until you figure it out or have to study guides. Core experience of this game is really bad.
Then there is another issue. This game is at the same time unforgiving AND does not punish you for your deaths. You can die as many times as you want, but you will be respawned in a middle out of nowhere only to die again again from cold. Nobody in dev team properly tested out co-op features or otherwise they just don’t care about quality of their game.
On the other spectrum, even if you try to do something constructive in this game, you will be attacked relentlessly by the monsters you can do nothing about. It is disheartening how often they come out of nowhere. It does not matter if you build it in save areas like in pigman villages, stay away from forests and potential hounds. Game will spawn an impossible to deal with adversary only to destroy everything you spent hours making just to make it “fun” for you.
Game is also very poorly balanced. As “open world survival” game it has of course mandatory, poorly made hunger meter which forces you to look always for the food and you are one step away from starving. Most of the time you will be eating through kilograms worth of meat just to get through a day. You have precious little time in trying to figure out this game, make something better or prepare for the winter/future.
All in all, this game has a nice concept, is aesthetically beautiful, has tons of content, but plays really poorly. It despises new players and has countless frustrating mechanics which only are here to randomly set you backwards or outright kill you with there being very little of what you could do about it.
