A good game brought down by developers
It is rare when game actually gets worst during long development cycles. Countless trailers on steam page is good indication where developer priorities are. Instead of focusing on fixing game breaking bugs like game not loading for most people on launch they instead choose to add more and more monetization options. Balancing itself is completely broken, characters early on are useless, co-op is impossible to beat, bosses are such bullet sponges that it is literally impossible to win a match with all the ammunition you can carry. Game is becomes boring as enemies are just bullet sponges and it offers very little over what other L4D type games can offer you instead.
Terrible scaling
When playing alone, game is pleasant. Zombies die quickly with a good headshot. Special enemies die from a concentrated fire. Shooting is smooth. However, when it comes to co-op, the only type of balancing devs can do is to scale hitpoints of enemies to infinity. With 3 players, I was constantly running out of ammunition on every wave. Bosses were such a massive sponges that at first we thought that we are just not getting it, not shooting at its weakspot, because we were doing so little damage. Elites become absolutely tedious to deal with and requires concentrated firepower. This is on normal difficulty and we struggled to win any match at all. It would be so bad that our team would spend entire ammunition supply and still have to plow through 1/3 of boss health.
Game is nigh unplayable in co-op and this is why most people play it solo as seen from youtube videos.
The Grind
The issue is that this game has perk system which locks you out of playing any class. It gives you flat 25% damage bonuses with just leveling your character. It removes recoil of some weapons which otherwise would be hard to use. Perks can outright double your damage and resistances to damage. This game feels more like an RPG than a shooter where you grind for power. However, unlike in a good RPG-shooter like Borderlands 3, you cant make a custom build for your class. Customisation options are very limited and in the end it boils down to grinding to make gameplay with any class viable. It also locks you out of playing other classes, because if you want to complete a mission, you have to level up classes. You can’t play this game with 0 level ones.
This game does suck when you start playing. Grind of classes is real and power growth is considerable while enemy’s strength does not grow. Game is balanced around leveled up characters even from a normal difficulty and can’t be beat by average people reliably if they do not have leveled up characters.
Money grabbing devs
Then comes monetisation. It is annoyingly put to your face, showing store no matter where you go. Are you in game menu or in game, you can always spend just 9,99 buying some garbage. Most items are pointless, uninteresting and heavily overpriced. Payday 2 at least sells something interesting to you, here items are just bland and way too in your face. Marketing is a lot more aggressive, items are a lot more boring and customisation of characters in general are a lot worse.
Bug Fiesta
Finally, BUGS. Lots of them. We tried to play 3 man co-op and we all encountered multiple bugs. I had two or three different types of crashes. Game also freezes and my friends struggle to even turn this game one. Game has issues with alt tabbing sometimes. It is bug fiesta.
In conclusion
I’m surprised that after all this time, quality of Killing Floor 2 actually had managed to come down rather than improve. It is a shame, game has some potential, but years of development seems to have squandered that potential and they only added more stuff while slowly diluting the quality of a game itself. As it stands now, game offers very little when compared to other Left for Dead type of games. Left4Dead 2 has more tactical gameplay, more immersive and tight experience of zombie apocalypse which is both better balanced and more hectic, chaotic. Payday 2 has a lot better customisation of your character, it has a lot better scaling of difficulty and more in depth weapons system. Vermintide 2 is better hack and slash experience. So far, this one was the worst experience out of all those games and it left a sour experience to our party. We would rather play any of those games rather than this one and you should consider also if you really want to stick with this one either.
