The Good Old Games of the past brought back to modern age
This is a game mod for Warcraft 3, now professionally done as a stand-alone game by their previous creators. We don’t get games like this anymore.
Gameplay
The main gameplay of this game is building your own lane while sending mercenaries to enemy’s lane while building your economy with spare gold. A simple concept, but it is incredibly complex to master. First, game feels like a puzzle game. Waves are always the same. You have to figure out the most optimal strategy for each wave. You can pick or roll unit roster. Each roster will have unique strengths and weaknesses. This will define how well or poorly your early game will be and vice versa, how strong your end game units are going to be. There are plenty of openers which defines how well you can scale, which are your strong and weak waves. You have to learn all of it while following what the enemy is doing and punishing its mistakes. You can do a mistake by building too much units and not purchasing enough workers. If enemy is doing that, instead of sending mercenaries, save them for a bigger wave. If enemy is under-building and purchasing workers for late-game scalling, send mercenaries. This is how you are going to break through his lane and get free gold which will allow you to scale better and to ultimately overwhelm enemies with resource advantage. This interaction is very deep, it requires you to constantly see what your opponent is doing, know myriad of viable openers and nuances to them. Then build on their strengths and exploit their weaknesses in your opponent. First half of a game is like chess, it requires figuring out the most optimal build for any key combination of units.
Second part of a game is where you get a lot of gold. Where enemy armor and damage becomes powerful. Where your and enemy will have myriad of different units, different damage types and armor. It will become up to you to figure out against what they are weak, against what they are strong. In which waves they are going to perform well and poorly. What kind of mercenaries will perform well or poorly. Game becomes a lot more intuitive as there are way too many variables to ever to figure out. Gameplay changes from a puzzle to scalling. It is up to you to make most OP lane possible in order to deal with ever more insane waves. If neither manages to beat each other and game drags out, game will be decided by most insane build as they will delay and weaken waves the most which will cause game to be lost via attrition.
AI & Solo Play
This game has surprisingly strong AI which will help you to figure out your strategies and how to play. If you would beat all non-cheating AI modes, you will be better than 70% of all players. Game also has campaign mode to play more casual battles against AI which is scripted to go for one or the other strategy. Game has tons of solo content and most of my time spent on this game was on solo content.
The Fun
To me, the fun part is figuring out combinations, builds, unit placements. Figuring out mercenaries and for what they are good for. Game has ton of depth and literally thousands of hours of exploration. While game is static, your opponent provides a dynamic element which makes game unpredictable.
Game is not for everyone
Some people might not like it, because it feels like a puzzle game until 11 wave and it is true. Your valid options are quite limited and you can figure out 1 best solution to your unit combination and to counter your enemy. Only later game becomes more dynamic and allows improvization. Game feels static and limited. You have to get hooked on desire to optimize and to figure out better strategies. This game rewards players who want to know every little detail about every unit and such information is needed if you want to progress far on leaderboards.
Conclusion
Game is not for everyone. It requires patience, desire to figure out inner mechanics, to figure out best builds. Game is a puzzle game at the start and stacking advantages at the end. Game is very competitive and requires a lot of experience and practice to play. It is fun game for people who like those kind of games and a blast from the past. I highly recommend for anyone who has interest in such games to give it a try.
