Like original Doom, game tends to be heavily overhyped. This is a game which people recommend out of nostalgia, but when it’s put under critical inspection, it falls apart quickly.
While it has some strong features, most of the time you will find yourself frustrated as a new player. It has maze-like levels where you just don’t know where to go next and wander endlessly and pointlessly throughout the level. Its levels are disjointed, having no correlation with each other. Compass does not help at all and often just misleads you. Levels are the mixed bag, some are nice, some are terrible to look at.
Weapons, while some guns are enjoyable, others are less powerful and ammunition for them is rarer. A good example is a stake gun. However, it fires way too slowly to be useful against hoards or enemies. Other is an electrical/shurikan gun. It lacks range and damage potential and ammunition for it is quite rate to be used consistently. Likewise, grenade launcher is pointless due to its bouncing mechanics and low range, making it a dangerous weapon to yourself. You will be using only very few weapons who are actually good most of the time like a shotgun and put the rest to novelty section, especially if you are playing on harder difficulties.
Story is simplistic and while it has some interesting twists, it is just undercooked for it to be of any value. As for gameplay formula, it is quite repetitious. You will be locked into a room until you kill all spawning enemies and this is how it goes throughout entire game. In game physics are broken when it comes to performing more advanced jumps to find harder to reach physics and can’t be relied on.
Boss fights tends to border on absolutely horrible, especially in later half. They are massive bullet sponges with heavy RNG element. There is one boss on the roof which is a good example, you are fighting him on the roof. Boss in later stages shatters the roof and instant kills you with drop damage. How can you win against it? By repeating boss fight so many times that you memorise pixels where you need to stand during his phase shift that you can land on pillars and take minimal fall damage…Yeah, boss fights tend to border on being that bad. Others are more obscure like with vampire. You can’t kill it, you have to find a hidden object in a level and fire at it when boss is under it. Game has the worst qualities of old games.
While it is good game in its own right, it was heavily overhyped by some people. Yahtzee is a good example where he shows favoritism to some games while ripping to shreds a lot better games. I came to try this game due to hype behind it and I must say, it does not deserve any. While it has few great qualities which makes this game unique, they are not enough to make this game a classic.
